Javelin Minerals (ASX:JAV) drilled the hole to 819.8m, intersecting a volcanic and intrusive sequence consistent with rocks seen in the historic Coogee open pit.
The strongest geological response came between 529.12m and about 731m downhole, where Javelin logged brittle faulting and brecciation, moderate to strong hydrothermal alteration, quartz and quartz-carbonate veining, and variable pyrite and chalcopyrite sulphides.
Core cutting and sampling is under way, with laboratory assays expected in about 8-10 weeks.
The explorer says the geology suggests the hole may have passed over the top of a larger intrusive body, due to the combination of systematic alteration around dacite dykes and the broader altered and deformed zone.
Due to this, the company is now planning an extension to the completed hole, or a wedge hole to test below and/or to the side of the original hole to target the centre of the large magnetic anomaly.
Magnetite-bearing alteration at shallower Coogee North gold-copper mineralisation was a key vector into the deep target, so locating the source of the magnetic response remains central to JAV’s follow-up plans.
The current hole has provided fresh geological information around that target while leaving the main magnetic source unresolved.
Javelin will combine the new core logging, laboratory assays, portable XRF data, magnetic susceptibility readings and existing airborne geophysics to refine the next drill position.
The rig has already moved to Coogee West, where a second hole is being drilled to about 1,000m into a separate large geophysical anomaly.
It is the second leg of Javelin’s two-hole Coogee campaign, which began in early September, and is the first deep drilling to directly test the source of either modelled anomaly.
Coogee sits about 55km south-east of Kalgoorlie on a granted mining lease.
The project already hosts a gold mineral resource of about 3.65Mt at 1.08g/t Au for 126,685oz, alongside an inferred copper-zone resource of about 1.02Mt at 0.41% Cu for 4,122t of contained copper.
The Coogee North anomaly sits directly beneath much of the existing gold-copper resource area, while Coogee West is associated with an extensive bedrock gold anomaly.
That gives Javelin two distinct deep tests in the same campaign. Coogee North has supplied a broad altered geological section and new data for follow-up targeting, while Coogee West remains an untested second target. Assays from Coogee North will be the next test of whether the altered and sulphide-bearing rocks carry meaningful gold or copper grades. In parallel, the company’s extension or wedge-hole planning will determine how it goes back.
